EIGHTEEN

“Seriously, Becca, if we’re not out of this house in the next minute, you’re going to start taking the bus to school,” I yell down the hallway.

The morning hasn’t been good. After watching the movie, Becca headed off to bed. Brandon and I spent most of the night talking about our families. At some point, I fell asleep, barely remembering Brandon carrying me to bed and curling up beside me.

When Molly woke me up only a few hours later so she could stay with Becca as I went to do my baking for the day, it took everything to crawl out of bed. And, of course, I didn’t miss the look she gave me when Brandon came out of the bedroom with me.

The drive to the bakery took longer than expected because of the icy spots on the roads. And the rest of the morning continued in the same fashion. I had a bag of flour break open, a container of chocolate chips fell onto the floor, and somehow I ripped my shirt as I carried trays out to the display case. I barely returned home in time for my great-aunt to head off to the diner. Seriously, I can’t wait for Archon to take over this part of the bakery.

“I’m coming,” my daughter says, shoving items into her backpack as she exits her room. “I don’t understand why you are so grumpy this morning. I would have thought you would be in a better mood after Brandon spent the night.”

“Becca.” I can’t believe she would say that.

“It’s not like I’m a baby. I know what happens when a man and woman spend the night together.”

“We talked. And I slept. Nothing else happened.” I grab my bag from the table by the door. “And I’m not grumpy. It just hasn’t been a good morning. Plus, you’ve already been late to school once this week.”

“That wasn’t my fault.” She grabs a sweater from the hook. “You were the one who hurt yourself walking down the steps.”

I groan, not needing a reminder about my ankle. At least it is feeling better. “Well, I’m not having you be late again.” I shoo her out of the door. Plus, I really want to talk with Shirley Downs before heading into my shop.

It only takes a few minutes before we head down the road. I glance at Becca as we pull onto the main road. She isn’t on her phone like usual, meaning she has something on her mind.

My focus returns to the road. “What’s up?”

“I overheard you talking with Uncle Ethan last night before we came home.”

“What have we discussed about you eavesdropping on our conversations? There are some things you shouldn’t be hearing.” I rack my brain, trying to remember what we had talked about. Then it hit me. “You heard we’re concerned about Molly.”

“I already told you about how she had trouble moving things during our last magic lesson after she got a phone call. And if you guys have seen things….” Her voice breaks before taking a deep breath.
